Presentation and Goals
The eighth edition of the Thesis and Dissertation Competition of the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (CTD) aims to select and award the best Doctoral theses and the best Master's dissertations in the areas of computer networks and distributed systems. The theses and dissertations that compete this year will be evaluated according to the scientific and technological results already generated by the work, as well as their potential impact on society and the state of the art in the area.
We invite researchers in the areas of computer networks and distributed systems to submit articles describing, in summary form, the results obtained in their theses and dissertations completed, defended, and approved between January 1st and December 31st, 2024. The event will award prizes to the three best Doctoral theses and the three best Master's dissertations.
Topics of Interest
The themes of the theses and dissertations must be related to any topic in the areas of computer networks and distributed systems, including, but not limited to, those listed in the Call for Papers to the SBRC 2025 Main Track.
Instructions for Authors
Submissions must be made electronically through the JEMS3system. Each submission must contain four files, all in PDF format, as follows:
1) Extended abstract written in Portuguese or English, respecting the maximum limit of 10 pages, including text, figures, references and appendices. The text formatting must follow the SBC Model for Publication of Articles. It is also important to emphasize that articles to be submitted must follow the SBC's Code of Conduct for Authors in Publicationsapproved by the SBC Board in February 2024. In the article, the author must clearly state the contribution of the work to the field and the possibilities of its impact. The text must include, mandatorily, the title of the thesis or dissertation, the names of the author, the faculty advisors and co-advisors with their respective affiliations, abstract, characterization of the research problem and motivation, objectives and contributions, related works, results obtained, research methodology, public or private database, as well as any other elements. When necessary, the abstract may make references to the text of the thesis or dissertation.
2) Text of the by-products (such as scientific articles, patents, registered programs, as well as any other elements that allow the qualification of the work), written in Portuguese or English, which should include the main scientific productions, respecting the maximum limit of 6 pages, also using the SBC Model for Publication of Articles. The text of the by-products will serve, essentially, as a reference source to evaluate the impact of the by-products generated by the Doctoral thesis or Master's Dissertation. Authors are asked to indicate by-products of the work, such as articles in which they are first authors, with the respective number of citations; articles in which they acted as co-authors, also indicating the number of citations (the journal's impact factor and/or the conference acceptance rate may be mentioned); patents, registered programs, and programs in the public or free domain, with their respective URLs, and; information on the impact of the by-products, including, but not limited to, number of downloads, number of registered users, number of views, etc. It is important to note that all by-products must be registered in the Lattes Curriculum. In addition, articles that have been accepted but not yet published must include the acceptance email.
3) Full text of the thesis or dissertation, which will essentially serve as a source of reference for the evaluators on the results of the work, that is, the text itself will not undergo a review process.
4) A scanned copy of the diploma or document proving that the thesis or dissertation was defended and approved. If it was approved with restrictions, show that the restriction was resolved.
Awards
The CTD awards will be held according to the event schedule, still to be defined. It is mandatory that the author of the thesis or dissertation be registered in SBRC 2025 in any category to have their article published in the Extended Proceedings and be able to present the work during the event.
Evaluation
Each paper will be evaluated by at least three members of the Evaluation Committee, who will analyze the material submitted by the authors. After the review and analysis phase, a discussion stage will be held between members of the Evaluation Committee to select the accepted papers.
The selected papers will be published in the SBRC Extended Proceedings and the author must present their paper in person during the CTD at SBRC 2025. For award purposes, the Evaluation Committee will take into account the complete paper, including the scientific and technological results already generated and potential, as well as the impact on the areas of computer networks and distributed systems. The quality of this oral presentation will also be evaluated and authors who do not present their papers at the CTD will not compete for the awards. The awards for the three best papers in each category will be held according to the event schedule, which is still to be defined. It is mandatory that the competitors be present at the award ceremony.
Publication
The proceedings of the Thesis and Dissertation Contest will be published in the SBRC Extended Proceedings on SBC OpenLib (SOL), the digital library maintained by SBC, and will be freely available to the entire society. All articles will be indexed with DOI and the proceedings will have an ISSN.
