Building and Connecting the Dots to Realize an Advanced Wireless Networking Testbed for O-RAN and 6G Towards Experimentation, Testing, Evaluation and Workforce Development
Dr. Aloizio Pereira da Silva, Wireless xG Testbed Director, Commonwealth Cyber Initiative
Abstract: The incredible amount of new technologies simultaneously introduced in the new perspective advanced networks will make very difficult to accurately evaluate and validate the End-to-End (E2E) operation of the network, when all the technologies will interplay. Mixing new frequencies, physical layer formats and numerologies, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), AI/ML and Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs/NFV) will create an E2E chain of possible unpredictable interactions. This uncertainty is also due to an unclear definition and clarification of new specifications and standards. That also get more complicated with the lack of individuals with the skills and knowledge to work with and deploy the new technology ecosystem. On the other side of the coin, the society and services market are experiencing a constant growth in both size and revenue, even though a common ground for verifying the benefits and performance in a standardized fashion is still lacking. Build and enable experimental, testing and evaluation network infrastructures/platforms (both indoor and outdoor) are key to create another dimension to significantly increase supply chain diversity and resilience, promote innovation and create the workforce development of tomorrow. In this talk we embrace the discussion about the challenges to build and enable such platforms. At the same time, we highlight the key values and benefits they can aggregate to the community. With that in mind, we brief describe the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) xG Testbed and the O-RAN Open Testing Integration Center (OTIC) in Washington DC metro area towards such effort. Join me in this talk to learn how applied and experimental R&D combined with Industry collaboration can impact and accelerated innovation and workforce development.

Biography: Dr. Aloizio Da Silva serve as a Wireless xG Testbed director at Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) and Research Faculty at Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at Virginia Tech. Dr. DaSilva currently leads the O-RAN Open Testing Integration Center (OTIC) at Washington DC metro area US. Da Silva’s areas of interest include wireless network, O-RAN, 5G and beyond. Mainly on software defined networks (SDN), software defined radio (SDR), network function virtualization (NFV),large-scale testbed experimentation, prototype and poof-of-concept, and mobile edge computing (MEC).
He also has a background in deep-space communication intersecting with delay and disruption tolerant networks (DTNs). Da Silva is also Technical Project Manager for Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) program at US-IGNITE/National Science Foundation (NSF) PAWR PPO where he manages and oversees PAWR testbeds, including AERPAW, POWDER, COSMOS and ARA. DaSilva has also served as a O-RAN Technical Project Manager consultant for USAID at the Philippines.
DaSilva has large experience on European Horizon projects acquired during his role as 5G portfolio manager and research fellow at University of Bristol UK. Da Silva earned his bachelor of science degree in computer science from the Pontificia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, master of science (MSc) in computer science from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), master of business administration (MBA) in project management from the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) and Babson Executive College, and doctorate (Ph.D) in computer engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA) and Researcher Scholar at University Of Santa Cruz California (UCSC). He also has expertise in deep space communication acquired during his PhD and Internship at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)-NASA.
